The director of the Honorio Delgado Espinoza hospital in Arequipa, Omar Barreda, questioned the transfer of patients with judicial proceedings to the psychiatric area of the hospital, after the recent escape of an inmate who remained hospitalized by court order.
The doctor pointed out that these cases are frequent and respond to judicial decisions, despite the fact that they are not part of the hospital’s function. Regarding the case, he assured that a research process.
Barreda explained that the internal, who presented depression and consumption of toxic substancesremained in the psychiatric hospitalization area, but managed to leave through door No. 1 to the outside.
DIRECTOR WARNS THAT IT IS NOT HIS HOSPITAL FUNCTION
For his part, he explained that exclusively 6 beds have been allocated for these cases of prosecuted patients and they remain under limited police custody. “A nWe have been told that this custodian can only care for a maximum of 4; we would need more. “We have asked the Judiciary to address this need of the population.”he stated.
In that sense, urged the Judiciary to implement specialized spaces within the prison system, which must have all the security measures and the corresponding specialists to care for patients.
“He was in psychiatric hospitalization in a large environment that has not been designed to care for this type of patient; it is not the hospital’s function, it is not our function to attend to cases of inmates with criminal or judicial problems. We do not have adequate personnel either; even the guards have suffered attacks.”he indicated.
