The digital exchange port for international underwater connectivity will be made up of two cables that will connect the Dominican Republic with the United States.
The information was released this Thursday Christian Ramosdirector of global infrastructure at Google, who explained that “this new ring” will allow the creation of two open routes, so that other operators, in addition to Google, can join the initiative and benefit the public of the Caribbean country.
“We believe that we contribute to the government’s 2030 digital agendabased on working with a reduction in latency and a reduction, an improvement in resilience, and reach, which is one of the objectives that motivates us to build this initiative. “We will have three times as many cables from the Dominican Republic, connecting ten times as many pairs of fibers to the United States… One pair of fibers can only transmit 17 billion videos in high definition,” he said.
He continued: “Simultaneously, we will connect services with two Google Cloud regions in the United States. This will be the first direct ring between the DR and the US, significantly increasing the reliability of the system.”
Likewise, Cristian Ramos highlighted that the importance of this investment not only lies in connectivity, but also generates positive externalities, such as the growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and support for the local economy.
“Studies in other countries where similar infrastructure has been built show GDP increases greater than 1.5%,” said the Google executive.
A fragile situation
He pointed out that currently, the Dominican Republic has six submarine cables connecting several Caribbean countries, but these are more than 15 years old, which places them in a fragile situation, considering that their approximate useful life is 25 years.

“In addition, of the six existing cables, only one has a direct connection with the United States, and a pair of fibers of that cable connects the country with the United States, which makes the need to reinforce this connection critical,” Ramos said.
Pillars of the digital port
The digital exchange port specifically, as specified, is based on three pillars: reach, reliability and resilience.
• Scope: allow more population to access cutting-edge services and content.
• Reliability: guarantee the continuity of services so that users are not affected by failures.
• Resilience: ability to recover quickly from any interruption.
“These pillars are applied under three principles: efficiency in the use of energy and territorial resources, sustainability and opening of the infrastructure to other market actors, promoting local alliances,” he explained.

He added that the port will be built in the Dominican Republic in a building of more than 7,000 m² with all the necessary services, prepared to receive up to four international cables, many of them connected directly to the United States.
“It will have a direct connection to Google Cloud regions in South Carolina and Virginia, improving reliability, resilience and reducing latency through local content storage. Other operators will also be able to integrate into the digital exchange port,” the executive said.
