LIMA, Peru – A riot inside the high-security prison of Canaleta, Ciego de Ávila province, took place this Thursday morning, where a group of inmates protested prison violence and the extreme conditions they survive inside the prison.

“20 minutes ago I lost communication. We don’t know if they are being beaten and tortured at the moment. There are political prisoners among those who were protesting. One is a member of Cuba Primero,” reported Cuban opposition member José Daniel Ferrer. on X (formerly Twitter).

Videos posted by Ferrer contain recordings from inside the prison, where protesters denounce the lack of medical care, beatings and other abuses.

The Cuba First movement is leading the protests inside the Avilanian prison, said one of its founding members, Armando Labrador, on February 19.

“They are currently carrying out a protest inside the penitentiary center, carrying out a pot-banging attack as a sign of rebellion against the regime. According to audios sent to our editorial office, loud shouts can be heard from inside the prison with slogans such as: ‘Freedom’, ‘Homeland and Life’, and ‘Down with Díaz-Canel,'” Labrador wrote on social networks.

In photographs shared in other publications, the spokesperson for Cuba Primero showed the posters created by the inmates using sheets, one of them demanding the release of the two young people. of the audiovisual project El4ticoErnesto Ricardo Medina and Kamil Zayas recently imprisoned by the political police of the Castro regime.

Likewise, Labrador exposed the faces of some jailers allegedly involved in the repression and beatings of political prisoners within Canaleta.

“This fact confirms that the cry for freedom cannot be silenced, not even behind the walls of the regime’s prisons. The world must look towards Cuba. The political prisoners are not alone,” he stressed.
