“We genuinely care for our people”: DHL again tops GPTW

DHL is a horizontal company. The closeness between its employees is notorious —beyond the hierarchies— and, in fact, this led it to be the second best place to work for less than 150 employees in 2022 and the first in 2021according to the ranking prepared year after year by Great Place to Work (GPTW).

In the last two years, the challenges imposed by the covid-19 pandemic and, in particular, the call container crisis impacted the German international logistics company. However, “The success” of overcoming this context has to do with the company’s motto: “The most important thing is that our people are well, that they are at the center of our corporate strategy”said to Coffee & Business the general manager of DHL in Uruguay, Hernán Romay.

“When I say that the most important thing is people, I mean that they are well in their work, in their personal life, in their health; Lately, we have transcended the frontier of work and we promote a healthy life in general, both in people and in their families”, expressed Romay. “We are pioneers in going for more because our halo impacts more people beyond our workers”, said the manager of Felicidad, Ana Terán.

This Thursday, DHL received recognition from GPTW, whose survey is based on different queries that are answered by the company’s own workers. “This ranking is very important for us because it determines the level of commitment on the part of the workers”said Magela Muñoz, DHL Human Resources Manager.

Since GPTW operates in the country, the logistics company has conquered the first places of the recognized list: “This is a source of pride for the entire team for all the efforts and challenges that are presented to us every day; it gives strength and encouragement to improve and be more competitive”, Romay pointed out.

“This ranking shows that we are an agent of change”said Terán, adding: “Being in the ranking for so long makes people and many companies look at us and this provokes inspiration, but also a lot of responsibility in the impacts we generate; maintaining high confidence in our leaders is essential”, said the manager and pointed out: “This forces us to go for more”. DHL has different internal policies that, according to its authorities, are a fundamental part when it comes to understanding the organization. These range from seeking employee benefits to being flexible in the working day. As of the pandemic, the hybrid modality to operate in the company was maintained, and “the well-being” of the workers was even more emphasized, Muñoz specified.

In this way, the company offers financing for the studies of the children of the workers and for building reforms in their homes, for example. At the same time, They provide “constant recognition to employees” when they are praised by a leader or their work is recognized by customers, the best workers of the year (by peers) get a trip to Playa del Carmen (Mexico).

We constantly celebrate, even each sector of the company has a special day in the month to celebrate what they want”, added Muñoz. “Every day we come to work and commit ourselves to the DHL family”, said the Human Resources manager.

“Our purpose is to connect people and improve lives; We take this to everything: from the transport of vaccines –as happened in the pandemic–, to the transport of a medicine, a spare part, or the letter that you want to send to the family member that you love and miss. This and the genuine care for our people is what moves us”, concluded Romay.
