Within the framework of the beginning of the annual period of sessions of the “Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on Strengthening the Role of the Organization”, which is held from February 18 to 26, at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, Ambassador Joaquín Pérez Ayestarán, Alternate Permanent Representative of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the United Nations, was elected by acclamation as President of said subsidiary body of the General Assembly, reported the portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The election, carried out by consensus and without a vote, constitutes recognition of Venezuela’s firm and historic commitment to the defense of the Charter of the United Nations, multilateralism and the principles of International Law, within the framework of its historic Bolivarian Peace Diplomacy, oriented, among others, to the peaceful solution of controversies, respect for the sovereignty of States and the development of a new international geopolitics, in which a multicentric and pluripolar world takes shape.
After his election, representing the States of Latin America and the Caribbean, Ambassador Pérez Ayestarán thanked the trust placed in Venezuela to exercise such an important responsibility and ratified the country’s firm commitment to strengthening the role of the Organization and preserving the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
The Venezuelan diplomat stressed that, within the framework of the current international context, marked by an increase in conflicts, polarization and instability, it is urgent to assume a renewed defense of multilateralism and a full – and non-selective – application of the UN Charter. In this sense, he stressed that said instrument is not a document from the past, but rather a living legal framework that continues to be the collective compass to guarantee the maintenance of international peace and security.
Likewise, he emphasized the importance of reaffirming the primacy of the founding Charter of the UN, strengthening genuine and inclusive multilateralism and promoting dialogue based on mutual respect and political will to respond to the legitimate aspirations of the people. He noted that, through the faithful application of the postulates contained in that historic treaty, current disagreements can be avoided, tensions can be reduced and conflicts can be resolved peacefully.
The Special Committee, established by the General Assembly in 1975, is mandated to examine issues related to the maintenance of international peace and security, strengthening the role of the Organization and promoting respect for the Charter of the United Nations. Their work takes on particular relevance in the current global scenario, characterized by growing tensions, a crisis of trust and leadership, as well as an important set of systemic challenges to the multilateral order built over the last eight decades.
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela assumes this Presidency with a sense of historical responsibility, reiterating its unwavering commitment to the defense of International Law, the sovereign equality of States and the inalienable right of peoples to self-determination, non-interference in internal affairs and the peaceful resolution of disputes, fundamental pillars of the Bolivarian Peace Diplomacy.
With this election, the international community recognizes Venezuela’s active role in promoting the purposes and principles enshrined in the UN Charter and in defending multilateralism as an indispensable way to confront the common threats and challenges that humanity faces today.
