Urges to use more AI in tax administration

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) urged to strengthen the management of the tax administration, through the use of artificial intelligence.

Likewise, allocate the necessary resources, since technology allows us to strengthen tax collection, combat evasion and promote greater equity in tax management.

The entity launched a report with a set of recommendations for the application of AI in the tax administration of Latin America and the Caribbean and drew attention to the lack of budget allocations in the countries’ AI agendas or strategies.

Explain that Dominican Republic It is one of the nine countries in the region that does have national AI strategies, but, along with Brazil and Colombia, it contemplates investment of resources without detailing the specific use.

“It is important to guarantee that they are being exercised efficiently and that they are not proposals that only remain on paper. It is essential that, at both the national and institutional levels, spending items are assigned for this technology in the budgets,” he indicates.

Latin America spent the equivalent of US$11.59 billion on AI in 2023, while the United States spent US$87.19 billion, Europe US$63.18 billion, and China US$29.02 billion. This shows a significant lag in the region and makes it necessary to prevent the technological gap from deepening.

ECLAC indicates that the three pillars of AI (quality data and its governance, robust and modern technological infrastructure, and human talent with digital skills) must be priorities for administrations, in order to consolidate a framework on which this technology can be adapted and taken advantage of.

These pillars require sufficient economic resources that are sustained over time, but with efficient use.
