60 years have passed since the Geneva Agreement on the Essequibo

The President in charge of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, through a message on her Telegram channel, highlighted the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Agreement of 1966, the only valid legal instrument to reach a mutually acceptable solution to the territorial controversy.

He affirmed that all of Venezuela, with each of its legitimate territories, “is the one that shines like the eight stars that vindicate our history.”

In the message he highlighted that each star that flies on the National Flag “represents this legitimate territory, an inalienable right” that The Liberator Simón Bolívar freed from the domination of the Spanish monarchy.

He expressed that today Venezuelans carry in their souls a “complete, united and integral Venezuela; heir to our liberating glories” represented in eight provinces: Caracas, Cumaná, Barcelona, Barinas, Guayana, Margarita, Mérida and Trujillo.

Today the people reaffirm the fight for territorial integrity and sovereignty over Guayana Esequiba by commemorating the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Agreement of 1966, the only valid legal instrument to reach a mutually acceptable solution to the territorial controversy.

Through a statement, the Foreign Ministry of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela recalled today, through its official social media channels, the sixtieth anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Agreement. This document represents the only current and legitimate legal instrument to resolve the territorial controversy over Guayana Esequiba.

Foreign Minister Yván Gil highlighted that this treaty seeks to reach a fair, equitable and satisfactory solution for the parties involved in the dispute. The Venezuelan State underlined the historical importance of this mechanism, which allowed the direct participation of Guyana after obtaining its independence in May 1966.

This milestone transformed the process into a direct dialogue between two sovereign nations, moving it away from previous colonial impositions. The official statement emphasizes that the Geneva Agreement constitutes the fundamental legal basis to overcome the tensions inherited from the imperialist period.

Commitment to sovereignty and peace

The Bolivarian Government ratified its unwavering will to respect each clause of the agreement to achieve a definitive and peaceful resolution. The institutional publication described the dispute as a “regrettable inheritance” of foreign interference that affected the territorial integrity of the country.

In this sense, Venezuelan diplomacy insists that the path of mutual understanding guarantees stability in the region and respect for national sovereignty. The Foreign Ministry closed its message with the emblematic slogan “The sun of Venezuela is born in Essequibo!”, reaffirming the feeling of belonging to said territory.

Venezuela maintains its firm stance before international organizations, demanding strict compliance with what was agreed in 1966. The national Executive assures that it will continue to defend its historical rights through Bolivarian peace diplomacy and international law.

Venezuela bets on peace

For his part, the Venezuelan Minister of Defense, Vladimir Padrino López, the current geopolitical situation “can undoubtedly bring new opportunities to resolve territorial disputes in the region and move on to a positive sum game that brings progress for nations” that were “object of artificial borders drawn by extinct empires.”

“From the FANB (Bolivarian National Armed Forces), we ratify our commitment to the search for a peaceful, practical and satisfactory solution for both parties in the Essequibo region with its maritime projection, also pending delimitation,” he said on social networks.
