Trump vs Rubio: the new soap opera of the Cuban regime

Donald Trump y Marco Rubio

HAVANA.- The Cuban official press, which no longer retains the slightest trace of credibility and decency, has accused to the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, of deceiving Trump and manipulating him to increase pressure on the Cuban regime. The propagandist Rey Gómez has used as a basis information published by the site Drop Site News, founded in 2024 and recognized for its left-wing affiliation. Some specialized platforms estimate that much of their content is editorial or comes from unverifiable sources, which could be an indicator of the desperation of the Cuban regime, which does not hesitate to use biased and unverified information to try to undermine the trust that the Republican president has placed in Marco Rubiowith whom he has worked successfully conducting foreign policy affairs.

The Castro regime has panicked in the face of a duo that has not only outlined its objectives well, but is also working hard to achieve them. The lightning operation that ended Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores imprisoned in New York, showed the Havana dictatorship that Trump is not playing. If any doubt remained, it was erased with the energy blockade (truth blockade) imposed on the island two weeks ago, the effects of which have already begun to be felt in the economy. There is no public transportation. Taxis have tripled their daytime rates; At night, better not even dare. Airports lack aviation fuel. Various airlines They have canceled their trips until the situation improves, and while that happens, tourists go on vacation elsewhere. Parcel agencies have drastically reduced their services and Supermarket 23the online sales site that has profited freely from the hunger of Cubans, suspended its operations until further notice. Everything closes, becomes silent, collapses.

It is not difficult to guess what happens behind the scenes. The anthill has been shaken with violence, but in the face of international opinion it maintains its victim attitude. For the audience at home, the threats of jail in case of rebellion and the newly invented soap opera between Trump and Marco Rubio persist, not so much because Cubans are going to believe it, since there are always those who do it, but to scratch the president’s excessive ego. In the absence of effective diplomatic and political maneuvers, Castroism tries to pass off the Cuba problem as a personal whim of Marco Rubio, slipped into the agenda of a leader obsessed with leaving a memorable legacy, something he has already achieved, despite his countless enemies.

donald trump is the number one topic in every important corner of this world. The peace in Gaza, although fragile, is Trump’s peace. The rebirth of Venezuela’s oil industry, and of hope in the hearts of millions of Venezuelans, is named after Trump. Attempts at dialogue to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine are moving under the watchful eye of Trump. Thanks to – or because of – Trump, Europe stopped looking at its navel and assumed its corresponding defense spending as part of a historic alliance necessary for the survival of the West. Trump never wanted to invade Greenland, but he let the entire world make noise while his cabinet dedicated itself to negotiating until receiving what he considered essential to guarantee the security of his country. The first year of his second term has felt like an endless earthquake, one shock after another, but the results are on the table.

The Castro leadership would be interested in a negotiation without Marco Rubio at the table not because they believe they can trick Trump, but because they consider that the president lacks the “emotional bond” that moves the Cuban-American. The opinion that Trump would settle for a real economic opening and preferential conditions for American investments has acquired a certain resonance. But it happens that Marco Rubio did not become Secretary of State by getting emotional about the Cuba issue, but rather by being very clear about the role of the United States in the coming world. Rubio perfectly understands the responsibility of Castroism in the regional immigration chaos, the failure of the thaw promoted by Obama – an opportunity that the regime missed to implement structural reforms -, and Havana’s interest in letting time pass in the hope that Congress will be able to stop Trump.

To some extent Cuba could be a personal matter for Marco Rubio, but it is, above all, a key piece in the geopolitical map that the Trump administration is reconfiguring and not precisely through concessions in economic matters. Both know well that the Venezuelan disaster has the Castro surname all over it, that the seed of future destabilization in the region remains in Havana and that there has been no better time to root it out than now.
