In the letter released by the party, the Executive Branch’s determination to annul the agreement linked to the creation of ocean patrol vessels was “emphatically” rejected. According to the text, the measure has “exclusively political purposes” and aims to “destroy the legacy” of the previous administration and former president Luis Lacalle Pou.
In the document, it is maintained that the measure “disregards a procedure in accordance with the law” and described the resolution as “absolutely irresponsible.” In addition, he stated that the termination will leave the country without an instrument that the National Navy “has been waiting for 20 years” and that, he assured, the Frente Amplio failed to resolve during its 15 years of government.
The nationalists also expressed “concern” about the consequences that breaking the contract could generate. In this framework, they warned of the risk of a “multimillion-dollar lawsuit” and possible “damage” to the legal credibility of Uruguay, while highlighting that patrol vessels are “essential” for the protection of maritime sovereignty.
Finally, the board reaffirmed its support for the management of the Ministry of Defense during the past period and regretted what it considered a “painful” decision.
