The NGO Foro Penal reported that it has verified 444 releases of political prisoners from January 8 to February 15.

The president of the organization, Alfredo Romero, specified through his account in X that the figure corresponds only to people who have been released from detention centers and does not include those who remain under house arrest.

Foro Penal has reiterated that it does not consider as release those cases in which the detainee, after leaving the penitentiary center, continues to be deprived of liberty under precautionary measures such as arrest at his residence.

A week ago, the opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa and the legal advisor of the main opposition coalition, Perkins Rocha, were released from prison along with other political activists. However, Rocha remains under house arrest and Guanipa was imprisoned again the same day he was released, after the Prosecutor’s Office accused him of failing to comply with his precautionary measures.

Hunger strike in front of Zone 7

Since last Saturday, a dozen women – relatives of political prisoners – have been on hunger strike in front of the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB), known as Zone 7, in Caracas.

The protest occurs after the release of 17 people from that facility, including union leaders and two young people with autism spectrum disorder.

According to agency reviews EFEseveral of the family members have had health complications. One of them fainted twice and another received intravenous serum while lying on a mat outside the police center.

Earlier, the women reported that they started the strike to support their relatives who also started a similar protest inside the facility.

Likewise, they reported that Zone 7 authorities were pressuring the detainees to abandon the hunger strike, presumably under threat of transferring them to punishment cells.

So far, there has been no official statement from the authorities regarding these complaints.
