PNB officials try to stop protests by relatives of political prisoners in Zone 7

The protesters, who are chained to the doors of the police center, warned that they will not allow people to enter or leave the premises while access to the health professional is prevented.

Relatives of political prisoners who are on hunger strike in front of the command of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) known as Zone 7, in Caracas, reported this Monday that PNB officials tried to prevent their protest, after the authorities’ refusal to allow the entry of a volunteer doctor to verify the state of health of the detainees who also initiated the force measure.

The protest, which lasted more than 48 hours, has been carried out mainly by women who demand the immediate release of their relatives and the entry of doctor Rafael Arreaza to evaluate the political prisoners who have been on hunger strike since last Friday.

The protesters, who are chained to the doors of the police center, warned that they will not allow people to enter or leave the premises while access to the health professional is prevented.

In a video broadcast on social networks, an officer identified with the last name García warned that the women were committing an act considered criminal and urged them to “leave the show.” “That is a crime,” said the official, according to the recording shared on digital platforms.

The family members reiterated that their protest is peaceful and legitimate, and that they seek to protect the human rights of the detainees who, for the most part, are in vulnerable conditions after several days without eating food. They also pointed out that protesting is a constitutional right that cannot be prevented by police authorities.

The hunger strike occurs in the midst of a context of growing tension due to the delay in the releases promised by Venezuelan authorities since the beginning of January, which has led to multiple protests by family members and human rights organizations in Caracas.

Organizations such as the Human Rights Committee of Vente Venezuela have warned that the health of the strikers is “at serious risk,” and report that inmates within Zone 7 have also presented decompensation, while volunteers have had to provide IVs and monitor the blood pressure of the protesters.
