What is expected from the new Higüey Market: economic impact and details of the project

After more than 13 years of waiting, President Luis Abinader opened the new Higüey Municipal Market this Monday, a modern work that will benefit more than 200 vendors and that will transform local commerce, dignifying the working conditions of hundreds of merchants in the province.

The new market is the response to a historical debt with merchants who for years worked in precarious conditions and with a city that demanded organized, hygienic and safe spaces for the commercial exchange of basic products.

He stated that this market is not just a building, but a symbol of economic reactivation and the commitment to hygiene and formality, since merchants will have a decent space to work and citizens will have a safe and clean place to make their purchases.

“This is a great work whose cost was 335 million pesos. It has six modules and more than 200 parking spaces. I also want to inform you that all municipal districts will be paved and work is being done on the construction of the Otra Banda Beltway, in addition three roads of about 20 kilometers will be delivered,” said Estrella.

Likewise, he highlighted that the project will contribute to strengthening the local economy and expressed his gratitude to President Abinader for putting his eyes and heart on the Altagracians, “thus promoting a future of greater opportunities for the community.”

Modernity and functionality

The modern infrastructure is made up of a total of 212 commercial premises, administrative areas and health services. six pavilions housing around 218 cubicles, strategically distributed according to the classification of the products to guarantee order and hygiene.

The market will have a craft pavilion, one for meats and sausages, another for grains and canned goods, as well as three pavilions for items and vegetables.

Likewise, it will have two unloading areas and two parking lots with approximate capacity for 142 vehicles and 73 motorcycles, which will facilitate logistics and access for buyers and suppliers.

Economic and social impact

The work directly benefits more than 200 small and medium-sized merchants who previously worked in informal conditions or in obsolete facilities.

With the launch of the market, an increase in the commercial flow of the area is expected, as well as the creation of new indirect jobs that will strengthen the economy of the head municipality of the La Altagracia province.

The municipal authorities present at the event thanked the central government for addressing a historic demand from the residents of Higuey, who for decades required the total remodeling of this important supply center.
