The future of the president of the republic, José Jerí, is increasingly gloomy. On the verge of debating a motion of censure that seeks to remove him from the Government Palace, Peru21 He learned that the preliminary report of the Congressional Oversight Commission that investigates his unofficial meetings found “contradictions” between the president’s versions and those of the Chinese businessmen.
“From the statements received from the guests and the information provided by the entities, contradictions could be identified, which is why this commission considers that the standard of suspicion of the existence of reasonable indications that affected the public interest has not been cleared,” the document reads.
The report indicates two meetings of the president, one on December 26, 2025 at the already well-known chifa on Av. San Luis, after 10 pm, where he went masked to meet with the businessman Zhihua Yang, and the second on January 6 of this year at the Market Capon, in Cercado de Lima, with the same businessman, where he went, according to Jerí’s version, to buy Chinese candies.
The commission, chaired by legislator Elvis Vergara, also found contradictions when Ji Wu Xiaodong visited them in Congress, in the extraordinary session of last February 11, especially in relation to the commemoration of the Peruvian Chinese Brotherhood Day.
Likewise, the working group recalled that Jerí maintained that Ji Wu Xiaodong did not speak Spanish, however the businessman himself accredited himself to Congress as a language translator.
DEADLINE TO INVESTIGATE
The report of the Oversight Commission requests that the Plenary Session of Congress be granted 60 calendar days, extendable only once for a period of 30 days, to investigate the “alleged acts of corruption and irregularities” regarding the president’s unofficial meetings that “would be intended to favor certain economic groups.”
If the request is granted, the working group may make requests to lift the secrecy of communications, search premises, request an impediment to leaving the country, seize documents and require the assistance of public forces.
