President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva inaugurates on the morning of this Carnival Sunday (15) the Regional Emergency Center (CER) of the Hospital Federal Cardoso Fontes (HFCF), in Jacarepaguá (Av. Menezes Cortes, 3.245), in the southwest zone of Rio de Janeiro. The unit belongs to the Unified Health System network and provides free care to the population.
As established in a technical cooperation agreement signed between the federal government and the city of Rio de Janeiro in December 2024, the municipality is responsible for managing the hospital. The federal government makes investments to drive recovery and expansion of service capacity, forecast at more than 114 million.
HFCF is a reference in oncological physiotherapy, gynecology, nephrology (urinary system), pulmonology, urology and treatments for kidney failure in children. The unit provides highly complex services (with advanced technology and specialized teams) and medium complexity services (for exams, diagnosis, therapy and specific surgeries).
The Cardoso Fontes Federal Hospital was opened in 1945 by Getúlio Vargas. Doctor Antônio Cardoso Fontes (1879-1943), after whom the unit is named, was a researcher on the tuberculosis bacillus and worked at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation.
