Enfen declares national alert for climate phenomenon "The coastal child"

The Multisector Commission of the National Study of the El Niño Phenomenon (Enfen) activated the state of alert on the coasts this Saturday after warning that the natural phenomenon The Coastal Boywhich periodically raises ocean temperatures and causes rain and flooding, will affect the country starting in March.

The Enfen forecasts indicate “that the development of coastal El Niño would begin in March and persist until November.” This phenomenon mainly affects the marine strip.

It is expected that during its development “warm conditions of weak magnitude will predominate” that can “reach a moderate magnitude” from July, in the southern winter.

The alert declaration consists of redoubling vigilance in the face of possible natural disasters and recommending that the government “adopt measures aimed at reducing disaster risk, as well as preparation actions for response to imminent dangers.”

The climate authority anticipates that there will be “rain of moderate to heavy intensity and air temperatures above normal ranges on the northern coast,” which usually exceed 30° Celsius.

This climatic phenomenon is usually accompanied by avalanches, river overflows, heavy rains, droughts and an increase in temperature on the coast due to the overheating of the waters of the Pacific. The last time it hit Peru was in 2023.

Coastal El Niño is a limited version of the global El Niño weather phenomenon, which is related to warming waters in the Pacific Ocean and occurs on average every two to seven years.
