The president of the council of ministers, Ernesto Alvarez Mirandatalks about presidential scandals.
In Barbadillo are there curtains or curtains?
I would look for a middle ground regarding the “gollerías”. The regulations established that there could be televisions in collective areas. But Barbadillo has no common areas. The regulations must be adapted for a different reality. They have held the presidency. Nor can they be treated as dangerous prisoners.
The State does not give them food. How serious is it to have a microwave?
That’s how it is. There were cases years ago in which, from the drug trafficking pavilion, they requested delivery from the Country Club Hotel. And that was demonstrated in previous five-year periods. How serious is it that a former president can have a small refrigerator and can prepare or receive food?
It doesn’t seem serious to him.
The truth is no. But it has to be regulated. There is a lack of legal adequacy. That staff can supervise is legitimate.
The timing is questioned. Was it to divert the focus of the party in Cieneguilla?
I would be surprised if there are people who think, inside or outside the Palace, that an issue that is public and that has a certain morbid content is going to be distracted with scenes of former presidents with electrical devices. It would surprise me, which is why it doesn’t seem to me that it was a smokescreen prepared for that effect. That will disappear to the extent that the investigations carried out do not yield any concrete results.
What do you think is morbid?
It is enough that there are young women for there to be an additional ingredient. Every news needs a component.
They cannot be stigmatized because of their physique. But there are inappropriate ways and times. In companies there are protocols.
There have been assistants, assistants, even male advisors who have stayed the night in the Palace after a night and early morning operation. Especially after the first operations that the president carried out, basically as political gestures of support for the police and action against crime. Possibly, it has not been explained in a timely or convenient manner.
The advisors went to operations and stayed to sleep. Why not explain it?
There have been some cases, of men and women.
The morbidity is in the likes.
Well, the president is a single man. Two years ago I wasn’t even a congressman. If we analyze people by their private lives, we are going to run the risk of returning to the Victorian era when morality has such high standards that it can destroy anyone.
And that Congress blocked the investigation.
In institutions it happens that the first reaction is esprit de corps. And close the window so that the air does not enter. It’s an ordinary party. There is no more morbidity than that which may arise from self-interested speculation.
Was there a prostitution ring in Congress?
I don’t think so. I am anxiously awaiting the result of the investigation. Because it’s obvious that someone killed her. Thirty shots is not even a hitman, he is someone with a lot of fury.
Did you think about resigning?
No. If there was evidence of crimes, he would not be able to continue in the government. But so far there is a lot of speculation and bad intentions.
What would you recommend to the president from your political experience?
The main thing is that he continues learning. He has learned that every gesture, every location and every word has consequences. Therefore, I see him now as much better and much more established than the congressman who arrived at the Palace. At this moment he is a person who knows what he is doing. And I hope that, in principle, he will be freed from all types of investigations now and in the future. May he conclude his mandate and may it be a promise for future politics. Because if there’s one thing Peru cries out for, it’s a political class. Because not having a professional political class is very expensive for us. That is what is not normally understood. It seems like the disquisition of a political scientist. But the fact that there is no ruling class and that there are politicians who try to float and appeal to demagoguery or who propose to use not only the budget, but also the reserves… that generates consequences for the pockets of each of the Peruvian households.
The president is not on that demagogic line…
No, happily not. He is aware that everything in politics is about accountability.
In character it is different.
In character it is absolutely different. I am a person, if you will, from academia. He is a born politician, a politician from a very young age who has demonstrated abilities.
How are you going to prepare for February 14?
Hopefully we can give the day or afternoon free for all advisors. And let no one stay. Lights off after 7 pm.
PLEASE NOTE
- “No (there has been a distancing with the president). I know Otárola, he is from San Martino. We talk with the president, but there is a generational distance. We are not part of the same party. We do not sit for hours and hours to talk, because he also has an agenda. But we do talk what is necessary. We sit down to analyze the situation and the immediate needs. We meet with the chancellor. For example, on planes. The chancellor, obviously having problems at an international level “He has a little more time than the president who carries everything.”
