Trump announces possible visit to Venezuela and celebrates large payments for oil

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced a possible visit to Venezuela “we have a very good relationship,” although he did not specify a specific date for the trip.

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Friday a possible visit to Venezuela as part of what he described as a “very good” relationship with the administration headed by Delcy Rodríguez, whom his government now recognizes as the official interlocutor of Caracas.

The change in position marks a pragmatic turn in US foreign policy after the capture of Nicolás Maduro in early January, and opens a new chapter in diplomatic and economic relations between both nations.

“I am going to visit Venezuela, we have a very good relationship with the interim president”; Trump said this Friday at the White House, although he did not specify a specific date for the trip.

The president reiterated that the United States recognizes the Rodríguez government after months of ambiguity about its legitimacy and assured that both countries are “working together very closely,” especially on issues related to the energy sector. “I would rate the relationship we have with Venezuela a 10,” Trump told reporters.

This recognition and the possible US presidential visit occur in a context of easing sanctions on the Venezuelan oil sector, as well as greater diplomatic cooperation. In recent days, the US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, completed a visit to Caracas in which projects to boost crude oil production and attract investments from US energy companies were discussed.

The change in Washington’s attitude has also allowed the issuance of new licenses from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which make it easier for companies such as Chevron, BP, Shell and Repsol to negotiate contracts and resume operations in the country under specific conditions, in an attempt to reactivate the state oil company PDVSA and boost productive activity.
