Venezuelan sports journalism is dressed in mourning after the death of Humberto Acosta, an emblematic chronicler and ethical reference in Venezuelan sports, was confirmed this February 13.

With a career that spanned more than four decades, Acosta not only narrated the history of baseball, but also became the school and mentor of the generations that today lead the sports source. This was made known by his colleagues on social networks.

Sports journalists Fernando Arreaza, Mari Montes and Víctor Martínez agreed that with their departure, well-done journalism says goodbye.

Arreaza highlighted his “exceptional prose” and his gentlemanly character, while Martínez described him as a reference who became family. For their part, the Leones del Caracas, a team where he was a commentator on their radio circuit since 1987, sent their condolences highlighting his unique career in the league.

For her part, Mari Montes added: «It is a very sad day for journalism, it is a very sad day for baseball. It is very hard to say goodbye to a friend, one of the best in the industry, an exceptional and generous being, a teacher died: Humberto Acosta.
I don’t know what to say, other than Thank you!

Born in 1951 and graduated from the Central University of Venezuela, Acosta forged his legend mainly in the pages of the newspaper El Nacional, where he worked from 1978 to 2012. Beyond his statistics and chronicles, his colleagues dismiss him as an “exceptional and generous” human being.
