Giménez to Trump: “The time for a free Cuba is now”

Carlos Giménez

MIAMI, United States. – Cuban-American congressman Carlos Giménez wrote in an opinion article published this Friday by Fox News, that “the brutal regime in Cuba is collapsing in real time” and complained to the President’s Administration donald trump to toughen its policy towards Havana through the “full” application of current laws, without licenses or “vacuums.”

In the column, titled “Cuba is approaching its Berlin Wall moment; the United States must help it break through,” Giménez argues that the Cuban economy is “in free fall,” that the population “is hungry” and that the dictatorship “is running out of money, fuel and legitimacy.” It also states that the Island faces a “severe shortage” of food, medicine, electricity and fuel, and describes hospitals without basic supplies and blackouts that “last for days.”

Giménez attributes the crisis “solely” to the Cuban government and presents it as an “inevitable” result of socialism, corruption and “decades of catastrophic mismanagement.” According to his argument, the regime sustained itself for years by “exporting repression and importing life preservers,” including Venezuelan oil, remittances, tourism, and businesses that would have channeled foreign currency to the military establishment and the intelligence services; In his reading, those “lifesavers” would be “being cut off.”

Lawmaker praises President Trump’s “decisive leadership” and “aggressive enforcement” of U.S. law, singling out Cuban-American Secretary of State Marco Rubioas a promoter of that line. He states that the main impact would be on Havana’s ability to “finance repression,” and maintains that oil shipments “are drying up,” that international partners “are withdrawing” and that the Cuban government “is running out of options.”

In a central part of the text, Giménez assures that the “new employer” of the Cuban Government is communist China and affirms that Beijing has expanded “its footprint” of intelligence and strategy on the Island, just 90 miles from Florida.

As proposals, the congressman lists two axes: apply the law “completely and without exception” — “without licenses, without loopholes” and without “false ‘humanitarian’ exemptions” that, according to him, would enrich entities controlled by the regime — and cut off the remaining financial flows, including remittances and travel mechanisms captured by military business conglomerates. In the text, he also criticizes Barack Obama’s rapprochement policy and states that it “failed” in a “spectacular” way.

Giménez defends the use of sanctions and maintains that they do not harm Cubans “more than the regime already does” and concludes with the idea that Cuba is approaching its “Berlin Wall moment.”

In closing, the congressman—the only member of the United States Congress born in Cuba—assures that the American objective would not be “chaos” or “suffering,” but “freedom,” and concludes with a direct appeal to President Trump: “The time for a free Cuba is now.”
