Deaths from traffic accidents in Cuba increased by more than a hundred in 2025

This increase occurred despite the fact that the number of accidents recorded (7,538) was similar to the previous year (7,507).

The accidents in 2025 also left a total of 6,718 injured, a growth of 1.6% compared to the 6,613 reported in 2024.

The authorities indicated that seven out of ten accidents generate victims, mainly due to vehicle collisions, which continue to be the “most dangerous” accident, with 36% of the total deaths.

Furthermore, they indicated that the main causes of the total number of events were associated with the human factor, including lack of attention to vehicle control, failure to grant the right of way, and excessive speed.

The National Road Safety Commission also associated the occurrence of accidents with an increase in the vehicle fleet in Cuba, “mainly of vulnerable vehicles, such as motorcycles and mopeds.” review the newspaper Granma.

The above meant “a greater number of drivers with less experience and maneuverability to face the challenges imposed by a greater flow of vehicles, on the same deteriorated road axis,” said Lieutenant Colonel Chetty Carlos Lastre Rodríguez, head of the specialized traffic body of the Cuban police.

In addition to human causes, the Government has also recognized that the poor condition of the roads, due to the general lack of maintenance, as well as the age of the vehicle fleet – with vehicles with several decades of use – are factors that influence the occurrence of accidents.
