Yesterday, the Senate committees advanced the ratification of Ana Luisa Vallejo and Luz Elena Baños as ambassadors of Mexico in Belize and Guatemala, respectively, and it is expected that the issue will be put to a vote today in the plenary session.

In a session of the Foreign Affairs and Foreign Affairs Latin America and the Caribbean commissions, the diplomats received the support of all parliamentary factions, which highlighted their career in the diplomatic service.

Ana Luisa Vallejo pointed out that Belize is a strategic nation for Mexico, and if the commercial capacity with that country can be improved, there will be the possibility of exporting to the entire Caribbean. He stated that he will work on migration issues and protection of the rights of people on the move.

For her part, Luz Elena Baños Rivas said that one of the first strategies she will implement – if ratified in the plenary session – is to expand communication with businessmen, since there are opportunities in Guatemala.

In this way, he highlighted as one of his priorities strengthening trade between the two countries and improving logistics processes, as well as facilitating cargo clearance.

After meeting with the diplomats, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, emphasized that these appointments “reaffirm the leadership of women within the Foreign Ministry and the feminist foreign policy of Mexico,” while highlighting the trajectory and experience of the officials of the Mexican Foreign Service.

The chancellor pointed out that the new designations will allow continuity to the commitments assumed by Mexico on the southern border, in particular the agreement signed in Calakmul, Campeche, by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo with her counterpart from Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León, and the Prime Minister of Belize, John Antonio Briceño. This agreement gave rise to the biocultural corridor of the Mayan Forest, the second largest protected area on the American continent after the Amazon.
