Regarding his arrival, coach Brady described the incorporation of the Cuban as “fantastic,” considering him a player “whose experience and quality speak for themselves.”
“I know he is looking forward to starting here… He will bring a new dimension to the team and we are looking forward to working with him,” he added in his statements.
During his brief time at Charlton, the island forward barely participated in five games, always from the bench, in which he failed to score.
The few opportunities in that formation were due, to a large extent, to the continuous injuries that affected him during that period.
Despite these setbacks, Onel said he was not yet ready to stop playing soccer at a professional level.
In search of resurrection
Onel’s professional career began his professional career in Germany, where he emigrated with his mother and sister as a child.
In 2018 he made the jump to England, where he remained with Norwich for seven seasons, with sessions at Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, and in that period he became the only Cuban footballer who has so far played and scored a goal in the demanding Premier League.
Onel Hernández’s goodbye: “Norwich City will always have a special place in my heart”
Thanks to his performances, Onel was called up to the national team and became a reference for the updating of the island’s sports policy, which allowed the call-up of players who had managed international contracts on their own.
Since then, and except for moments when he was not physically fit to play, he accepted every call from the coaches and has always been proud to represent his country in international matches.
With his new club he will have the opportunity to show that he maintains the level for new calls from coach Pedro Pablo Pereira, or at least to continue extending his legacy in the demanding professional football of England.
