Ruslan Posadas, political scientist and professor at the Autonomous University of Mexico City, explains that although it is not widespread, in several parts of the country crime has political power in its hands.
What we are sadly seeing today is that the administration of political power is in the hands of organized crime.”

The Trump government is targeting so-called narcopolitics, knowing that protection from authority helps crime. In an interview with Carlos Díaz-Rosillo, former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for International Security Affairs of the United States, he explained that to combat the cartels it is required that the authority not have ties with them.
“It is impossible to think that a government is going to fight against the drug cartels, against organized crime, if the politicians who make the decisions are financed or not financed by the same drug traffickers, the same criminals. So, to change the system, to implement policies against organized crime, against the cartels, you cannot have those who make decisions in bed with the criminals,” he told Political Expansion .
Faced with the risk of being sanctioned
The designation as terrorists opened different risks of being sanctioned if it is proven that a company, entity or person collaborates with cartels. The consequences can be legal and financial, civil, criminal, freezing of accounts, as well as restrictions on the US financial system.
“Individuals who carry out certain transactions with the FTO and SDGT may be exposed to civil or criminal penalties, including for knowingly providing material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organizationwhich is prohibited by Title 18 of the United States Code, section 2339B.
“In addition, foreign financial institutions that knowingly facilitate a significant transaction or provide significant financial services to any of the designated organizations could be subject to sanctions for correspondent accounts or funds transfer in the United States, pursuant to Executive Order 13224,” details an alert issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
OFAC is responsible for implementing the economic sanctions program against countries, terrorists and drug traffickers.
If the United States made the decision to sanction a political party for nominating or maintaining among its ranks politicians linked to or members of terrorist cartels, problems would be generated for entire political organizations, as well as for access to power.
“If the United States government went deeper, as I assume it already has the files and links of those in politics and their alliances with organized crime, and linked itself directly, for example, to party leaders or party officials with crime, it would be devastating for the Mexican party spectrum because I insist no party can be saved,” says Ruslan Posadas.
