The multi-sector meeting held in the city of Huancayo to evaluate the situation of the New Central Highway led to the announcement of a 48-hour regional strike, promoted by civil society organizations, given the distrust generated by the recent decisions of the Central Government regarding the project.
Regional authorities, mayors, business associations and social organizations from the central macro-region met in Huancayo to demand concrete guarantees for the execution of the New Central Highway; However, the technical table was held without the presence of the Executive, congressmen from Junín or key authorities of the sector.
During the meeting, the Huancayo Chamber of Commerce expressed its concern about the project’s budget reduction and the absence of the Ministers of Transportation and Communications and Economy and Finance, pointing out that this work cannot be postponed and must begin its execution in 2026 with full financing.
The regional governor of Junín reported that the project is already in the investment phase, with more than 600 million soles executed in studies and release of properties, and warned that the constant changes in the Executive have generated delays of more than 400 days. Likewise, he questioned the recent resolution of the technical assistance contract within the framework of the government-to-government agreement with France, pointing out that this decision puts the continuity of the project at risk.
Representing civil society, the Unitary Struggle Command announced the call for a 48-hour regional strike, with the possibility of expanding to a macro-regional level, considering that the region has been “mocked” by the Central Government. The leaders demanded immediate political decisions and the resignation of the ministers responsible for the Transport and Economy sector.
In response to the questions, representatives of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and Provías Nacional assured that the New Central Highway is not paralyzed and that the resolution corresponds only to the technical assistance contract, not to the government-to-government agreement with France. They reported that coordination is being carried out with the French Embassy to guarantee new technical assistance.
The meeting culminated in a climate of tension and without definitive agreements, while social organizations ratified the protest measure in defense of the road project.
