PNP confirms national indictment against Jorge Acurio after conviction in 'cement bags' case

The head of the Cusco Police Region, PNP General Virgilio Velásquez, confirmed that there is a national indictment in force against the former regional governor Jorge Acurio Tito, after the Judiciary sentenced him to seven years effective prison for the crime of collusion in the case called “San Sebastián cement bags.”

“We are aware that the court gave an effective sentence. So, parallel to that, it has its corresponding requirements,” declared Velásquez, specifying that the arrest warrant has already been disseminated to all police units, both in Cusco like in the rest of the country.

The sentence was issued by Judge Jimmy Manchego, of the Unipersonal Criminal Court Specialized in Corruption Crimes of Cuscoafter a process that lasted 17 years. Acurio Tito, former district mayor of San Sebastián in 2009, was found guilty of the irregular acquisition of 54,020 bags of cement from the company URPI SAC, an operation valued at more than 1.3 million soles.

In the same ruling, the magistrate convicted twelve people, imposing sentences ranging from 6 to 12 years of effective prison. Among those sentenced with an arrest warrant are also María Teresa Guerra, Julio César Yauri and Helio Molina, while Néstor Machaca and Efraín Flores received the most severe sentences for collusion and embezzlement. Four other officials were sentenced with suspended sentences.

According to the investigation, the cement never arrived at the municipal warehouses, despite the fact that the receipt documentation and payment to the supplier were made in a single day. In addition, inconsistencies were detected in the brand of the product purchased and the one that was publicly displayed.

Finally, General Velásquez pointed out that the most convenient thing would be for the former governor to stand upright. “As authorities, we have to do our job: locate and capture,” he said.

The defense of those sentenced announced that they will appeal the resolution, so the case will go to a second instance, without suspending the current indictment against Acurio Tito.
