The National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais) of Cuba registered this Tuesday an earthquake of five degrees of magnitude in the southeast of the province of Santiago de Cuba, two days after documenting one of 5.6 degrees in Guantánamo.
The epicenter of this earthquake was located 208 kilometers southeast of Santiago de Cuba, had a depth of 10 km and was detected at 04:18 local time.
The tremor was felt in several locations in Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba, with no reports so far of those affected or victims. This is the second noticeable of the year, according to Cenais.
On Sunday, the national service recorded a 5.6 magnitude earthquake southeast of Guantánamo province, where local authorities reported light damage to about 20 homes, and several aftershocks.
In 2025, 4,535 earthquakes were recorded on the island, and of them only fifteen were perceptible, according to data from the specialized institution.
Last December, an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 shook the Guamá municipality of Santiago de Cuba. There were 446 aftershocks and their effects left damage to more than 90 homes and four state buildings.
In November 2024, the epicenter of two strong earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 and 6.7 was located near Pilón, which were followed by more than 800 aftershocks.
They register 57 aftershocks after the Imías earthquake, which left minor damage to homes
These two earthquakes left ten people injured and more than 8,600 homes damaged, 156 of them with total collapses and almost 6,000 with minor damage, according to a report by the Cuban Executive.
The area with the greatest seismic activity in Cuba is the eastern region, specifically along the southern coast of the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Guantánamo. Its high danger is due to its proximity to the Eastern Fault, which marks the tectonic plate boundary between the North American plate and the Caribbean plate.
