The recent dissemination of photographs of the cells where former presidents are held reignited the political and ethical debate in the country. The former minister and current candidate for the Senate for Country for All spoke on this topic, Juan Sheputwho described the event as a direct blow to the already weakened political institutions of Peru.
In interview with Peru21 TVSheput did not spare his criticism and maintained that what happened represents a deliberate degradation of public debate.
“It is the most perverse event that has been committed to national politics,” he stated, considering that the dissemination of this type of images does not respond to a legitimate informative interest, but rather to a spectacle strategy that erodes the credibility of the democratic system.
During the television conversation, Sheput also addressed one of the most sensitive issues that has shaken Parliament in recent months: the alleged existence of a prostitution network linked to high levels of the legislative branch.
The former minister assured that these are not simple rumors, but rather indications that point to far-reaching responsibilities. “There is evidence that the prostitution network operated at the highest level, involving former presidents of Congress, people like José Jerí,” he declared. According to Sheput, the case would have a recurring pattern that is once again becoming relevant today due to the current political situation.
“Now that Jerí is president, everything is coming to light,” he emphasized, suggesting that the position he holds today would have created the conditions for facts that previously remained hidden or minimized to come to light.
Sheput was even harsher when referring to the scandals surrounding the current parliamentary administration. From their perspective, the known facts are not isolated, but part of a repeated behavior.
“What we are seeing is a set of facts that show that this Mr. Jerí is deeply immoral, even corrupt,” he said, making it clear that, in his opinion, there would be multiple episodes that seriously compromise the integrity of the head of the Legislature.
Although he avoided advancing judicial conclusions, the candidate stressed the need for all complaints to be investigated independently and without political interference.
Allegations of alleged sabotage of investigations
Another critical point addressed by Sheput was the alleged sabotage of key investigations linked to high-impact criminal cases. In that context, he directly mentioned Colonel Carlos Morales, whom he accused of obstructing proceedings related to the Andre Vidal case.
“The car had been identified, but its confiscation was not ordered, and the people who were investigating were removed from their positions,” he denounced. For Sheput, these decisions not only generate suspicion, but seriously weaken the fight against crime and citizen confidence in the institutions in charge of delivering justice.
The former minister also involved in his statements the former head of the Interior, Juan José Santiváñez, whom he accused of having joined, without further support, a narrative promoted by Congress.
“Without knowing, he joined the chorus of pointing out that the poor driver was responsible for Vidal’s murder,” said Sheput, questioning the lightness with which – as he indicated – public statements that could divert real responsibilities had been made.
