Air Canada said it has suspended service to Cuba, effective immediately, due to persistent shortages of aviation fuel on the island. For now, the airline will focus on returning approximately 3,000 passengers who are in the Caribbean country back to Canada.

“In the coming days, the airline will operate flights ferry empty flights to the island to maintain, in the short term, its regular flight schedule from Cuba to Canada and pick up these users. Currently we have approximately 3 thousand passengers in Cuba,” the company said in a statement.

Air Canada made this decision following the notices issued by the aeronautical authorities about the lack of supply of aviation fuel at Cuban airports, including the main ones: Havana, Varadero, Holguín, Santa Clara, Cayo Coco, Camagüey, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba.

The airline explained that flights to Cuba are usually operated with narrow-body aircraft, both from its main fleet and from Air Canada Rouge, so it will evaluate the reassignment of these aircraft to other destinations.

For the remaining flights, Air Canada will carry additional fuel and make technical stops, if necessary, to refuel during the return journey. Likewise, it will continue to monitor the situation to determine, at a later date, the appropriate resumption of its regular service to Cuba. Some aircraft will stop in Santo Domingo

For its part, Air Europa reported that it will make a stop at the Santo Domingo airport, in the Dominican Republic, to refuel during its flights to and from Havana, given the problems facing the island.

Iberia, on the other hand, announced a flexibility in its fares on flights to Havana and will allow passengers to make voluntary changes. However, at the moment there is no confirmation that the situation will lead to modifications or cancellations of operations between Madrid and Cuba, according to the company.
