The government of Rio de Janeiro asked Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), to extend the deadline to hand over body cameras and images captured during Operation Containment to the Federal Police (PF)considered the most lethal police action in the country’s history.
In the petition sent to the Supreme Court, the state attorney’s office asked for another 20 working days to deliver all the material and allow the PF to carry out the examination determined by the minister. The request was sent to the Court last Friday (6).
According to the state government, the extension of the deadline is necessary to gather all the material collected.
“The determination to send all cameras and/or images captured during Operation Containment involves a high volume of audiovisual data, coming from different state agencies, which requires technical procedures for consolidating, organizing and verifying the integrity of the information”, explained the government.

On the 5th of this month, Moraes gave 15 days for the images and body cameras used by police officers to be handed over to the PF, who must present reports of the work carried out.
The operation was launched in October last year by the civil and military police against the criminal faction Comando Vermelho and ended with the death of 122 people, including five police officers.
The minister’s decision was taken in the process known as ADPF das Favelas – Allegation of Non-compliance with Fundamental Precept (ADPF) No. 635. In the action, the Court has already determined several measures to reduce lethality during operations in communities in Rio de Janeiro.
