Machado before the IACHR: "There is no transition without the rule of law and without full freedoms"

Machado pointed out that his return to the country will not be affected by the harassment actions against the opposition. So far, the opposition leader has not specified the date of her return to Venezuela.

The leader of the opposition and Nobel Peace Prize 2025, María Corina Machado, stated that as long as there is repression we cannot talk about transition in Venezuela.

Machado participated in the Plenary Session of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in Washington, United States, this Monday, February 9, where he recounted the political situation in the country.

“There is no transition with repression. As long as you cannot raise your voice, tell the truth. And that is the reality in Venezuela today. We are taking very important steps, but we are very far from being able to have full freedoms. Dates and milestones must be set. There is no transition without the rule of law and without full freedoms,” he said.

When referring to the arrests that occurred and the case of Juan Pablo Guanipa, who was imprisoned again the same day he was released, he noted that these actions give more strength to the citizens and the opposition. “Far from frightening us or keeping us quiet, they give us more reasons to continue mobilizing.”

Machado pointed out that his return to the country will not be affected by the harassment actions against the opposition. So far, the opposition leader has not specified the date of her return to Venezuela.

He thanked the plenary session of the IACHR and recognized its work in defense of human rights.

The proposals made by Machado before the IACHR:

1. Continue documenting the usurpation of power and what happened on July 28 as a legitimate exercise of popular sovereignty, despite legal and international violations

2.Maintain constant denunciation until the release of all political prisoners and amplify the voices of those who remain detained.

3.Denounce the irregularities of the Amnesty Law and demand its full and unrestricted application.

4.Propose an international visit to Venezuela as a sign of support for victims and human rights defenders.

5.Request a new updated report on the country’s situation.

6.Continue to promote the necessary measures until the violations cease.
*Journalism in Venezuela is carried out in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments in place to punish the word, especially the laws “against hate”, “against fascism” and “against the blockade.” This content was written taking into consideration the threats and limits that, consequently, have been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
