Havana., The Cuban authorities yesterday informed the airlines operating in the country that the supply of jet fuel will be suspended for a month starting this Monday at midnight, due to the energy crisis, an executive from a European company announced to AFP.

“Cuban civil aviation has notified all companies that there would no longer be a supply of Jet Fuel, aviation fuel, as of Tuesday, February 10 at zero hours,” said the executive of a European airline, who spoke in French, on condition of anonymity.

The latter specified that, for now, the measure is announced for a period of one month and that it will force companies that operate long-haul flights to make a “technical stopover” on return flights to ensure their supply of kerosene.

Regional flights should be able to continue their connections normally, the source said.

Bloomberg specified that the measure will be in force until March 11.

The Air France company in Havana indicated to AFP that it maintains its route with a planned technical stopover in another Caribbean country.

Cuba faces a very serious energy crisis after the end of oil supplies from Venezuela following the kidnapping of the president, Nicolás Maduro, on January 3.

The Cuban government announced on Friday a battery of emergency measures, including the four-day work week and teleworking in state administrations and companies, as well as restrictions on the sale of fuel, to address the energy crisis.

A reduction in bus and train services between provinces was also announced, as well as the closure of certain tourist establishments.

In the educational field, class days will be shorter and universities will operate in a blended mode. These measures should save fuel to favor “food production and electricity production” and enable “the safeguarding of fundamental activities that generate foreign currency,” declared the deputy prime minister, Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga, on state television.

Having cut off shipments from Venezuela following Maduro’s kidnapping, US President Donald Trump signed a decree last week indicating that he will impose tariffs on countries that sell or supply oil to Havana.

To justify its policy, Washington invokes an “exceptional threat” that, it claims, Cuba represents. The island says that Trump wants to “suffocate” them, and rejects the accusations.
