LIMA, Peru – The 5.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred this Sunday in the eastern region of Cuba had about 30 aftershocks in the following hours and left multiple damages to material structures, according to official reports.
He National Center for Seismological Research in Cuba (CENAIS) confirmed that the earthquake originated southeast of Imías and was noticeable in Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba and Granma.
During the first hour after the earthquake, 21 aftershocks occurred and in the second hour another 12, although they were not noticeable by the residents. CENAIS directors ruled out the possibility of a tsunami derived from that earthquake.
For its part, the state broadcaster Guantanamo Radio reported that in the municipality of Imías, slight cracks have so far been reported in some homes (estimated at at least 14) and in the polyclinic, as a consequence of the earthquake.
Working groups continue to visit the popular councils to specify other possible effects caused by the event, according to official information.
The earthquake was reported as noticeable at 7:00 am local time, located at coordinates 20.16 degrees north latitude and 74.44 degrees west longitude, at a depth of 7.1 km and located 24.0 km southeast of Imías.
This is the second earthquake perceptible for Cuba so far in 2026.
«The earthquake was very strong, I had never heard the walls of my house shake and feel an earthquake so strong that it almost didn’t let you move, thank God it was for a few seconds. If there were no significant damages,” Internet user Isael Bozan Acosta commented in an official publication.
