PUD warns of “serious omissions” in the amnesty law and demands the release of political prisoners

“It has not been a privilege”: Unitary Platform asks for answers on the cancellation of TPS

The Unitary Platform published a document with its observations and recommendations on the amnesty bill being discussed by the National Assembly

The Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) affirmed that the amnesty bill, approved in the first discussion in the National Assembly, contains “serious omissions” and demanded the immediate and full freedom of all political prisoners.

“An incomplete or conditional amnesty cannot be considered true,” the opposition coalition stated in a statement in which he expressed his appreciation after the review of the bill.

Among the omissions, the PUD highlighted the exclusion of large groups of civil and military political prisoners, the permanence of laws that violate human rights, the safe return of exiles is not guaranteed, political disqualifications are not lifted and it does not establish reparation mechanisms for victims.

A point that is worrying to the opposition organization is the one established in article 9, which leaves the application of the amnesty in the hands of “the same judicial bodies and the Public Ministry, which have been instruments of political persecution.”

In the statement, the Unitary Platform reiterated its demand for the immediate and full freedom of all political prisoners. He raised five points to consider in the bill being discussed:

1. The immediate, full and unconditional freedom of all political prisoners.

2. The return of all exiles, the annulment of administrative disqualifications for political reasons and the cessation of political persecution.

3. The dismantling of irregular armed groups, as well as the regime’s repressive apparatus.

4. The full exercise of freedom of expression and information, without undue threats

5. The full restitution of political parties that have been judicialized and dispossessed. Their symbols and cards must be delivered to their legitimate authorities.

*Journalism in Venezuela is carried out in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments in place to punish the word, especially the laws “against hate”, “against fascism” and “against the blockade.” This content was written taking into consideration the threats and limits that, consequently, have been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
