Cuban singer and songwriter Jorge Soto, known as Papushi, achieved two nominations at the 2026 World Tejano Awards, an event that made him in the first Cuban winner last year.

Papushi, who in 2025 became the first Cuban artist to win a prize in this contest in the Cumbia Pop Song of the Year section, consolidates his commitment to Tex-Mex, a genre that he embraces due to his admiration for Selena Quintanilla.
His style fuses Tejano, ranchera and Latin pop, which has allowed him to gain ground among followers of the genre.
The awards, organized by the Tejano Music Academy, are presented this Thursday in San Antonio, Texas, in a two-hour show that includes performances by established and emerging artists.
According to the event’s official website, the production promises a level of excellence comparable to large concerts.
The recognition of Papushi highlights the growing interest in Tex-Mex outside of Texas and northern Mexico, and opens space for the Cuban presence in a genre historically dominated by artists from those regions.
