Presidential Office approves payment for José Jerí's legal defense

The presidential office approved paying for the legal defense of José Jeríwho faces an investigation for alleged illegal sponsorship and influence peddling followed by the Attorney General’s Office.

The document states that under the provisions of literal I) of article 35 of Law No. 30057, Civil Service Law and article 154 of its regulations, the acting president has the right to defense and legal advice.

This request from President Jerí for Fiscal File No. 15-2026 opened for the alleged commission of a crime against the public administration in the form of illegal sponsorship and aggravated influence peddling, both to the detriment of the State.

As is known, President José Jerí is being investigated for the so-called Chifagate, in which he was captured by security cameras meeting with a Chinese businessman in a chifa and then in his business premises.

In addition, the case of young women who entered directly into the president’s office and days or weeks after those meetings with the president, received contracts and service orders in various State entities was also known.

In this regard, the national coordinator of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Offices, Omar Tello, did not rule out requesting the images from the video surveillance cameras from the Government Palace, as part of the preliminary investigation that was initiated into these hirings.
