The launch of the huaylarsh route, which mobilizes cultural activities for three months throughout the Mantaro Valley, takes place amid concern about the constant closures and collapse of access roads to the region.
Authorities and tour operators warn that not only the situation of the central highway, but also of internal routes to the districts since many are trails that are also affected by the rains, and could affect the arrival of visitors in the middle of the high season.
The manager of Economic Promotion and Tourism of the Municipality of Huancayo, René Lazo, recognized that the road issue represents a risk for the sector.
“The access roads to our region are collapsing on several occasions. That is why we have been coordinating with Provías and Deviandes for their constant support with the maintenance of the central highway, there is commitment, it is their job”he pointed out, specifying that the risks are unpredictable due to the climate factor.
For his part, the tour operator Manuel Nieto indicated that the rains and landslides are already generating losses. “Our tourists do not arrive or arrive hours late, harming their tour day and their stay”he stated.
Nieto warned that several circuits to the central jungle and high Andean areas have been suspended for security reasons, while only the Mantaro Valley maintains acceptable connectivity. “Tourism is delicate, people are afraid of being stranded”he stated, warning that, if the rains and lack of road maintenance continue, the expected influx may not materialize.
