Heads of Power will sign a pact against femicide in Brazil

With the country experiencing intolerable numbers of violence against women, The Three Powers of the Republic meet this Wednesday (4) to sign a national pact to combat feminicide. The ceremony will be held at Palácio do Planalto, in Brasília, from 10 am, with the participation of the President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; the president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Edson Fachin; and the presidents of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre; and from the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta, in addition to the Minister of Women, Márcia Lopes.Heads of Power will sign a pact against femicide in Brazil

According to the federal government, the pact will establish an integrated commitment between the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary to combat lethal violence against womenwith prevention, protection, accountability for aggressors and guarantee of rights.

Since the end of last year, amid a wave of brutal murders of women, Lula has demanded publicly take stronger actions to stop violence.

Around 3.7 million Brazilian women experienced one or more episodes of domestic violence over the last 12 months ending in November last yearaccording to the National Map of Gender Violence.

In 2024, 1,459 women were victims of femicide. On average, around four women were murdered per day in 2024 due to gender, in contexts of domestic and family violence or due to contempt and discrimination related to the status of women.

In 2025, Brazil registered, until the beginning of December, more than 1,180 femicides and almost 3 thousand daily calls via Ligue 180, according to the Ministry of Women.

Femicide is the homicide of a woman committed based on gender, characterized by domestic and family violence, disregard or discrimination against the female condition. It is considered the maximum expression of gender violence and often occurs as a result of a history of aggression, and may be motivated by hatred, inferiority or a feeling of ownership over the victim. In Brazil, it is considered a heinous crime and, when classified as homicide, the penalty is imprisonment for 12 to 30 years.
