The Government of Jerí approved the legislative decree that creates the National Superintendence of Internment and Resocialization (SUNIR), an entity that arises from the merger of National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) and the National Youth Center Program (PRONACEJ). As Martínez explained, the creation of the SUNIR responds to a fundamental restructuring of the detention system, hit by allegations of corruption, administrative deficiencies and a persistent crisis in prison treatment. “It is a change that involves an organizational, profound and structural reform, the Penitentiary Council is eliminated, Goes services are decentralized, the actions of the offices are in charge of penitentiary procedures.
