Within the framework of the eventual discussion of an electoral reform, Morena legislators presented various proposals to improve and strengthen the participation of Mexicans living abroad.
Accompanied by representatives of national and international migrant organizations, migrant representative Roselia Suárez Montes de Oca (Morena) announced that within her group a group of legislators are promoting initiatives for constitutional and legal reforms to guarantee the political representation and electoral rights of Mexican men and women residing abroad.
The Morenista maintained that the proposals contemplate modifying articles 2 and 35 of the Political Constitution, with the objective that migrants are recognized and have the full right to vote and be voted for.
In addition to a reform to the General Law of Political Parties, in its articles 53, 54 and 56, to allow active participation and formal contributions within the parties, that is, citizens can give resources to these political groups.
Even Suárez Montes de Oca assured that President Claudia Sheinbaum supports her proposals “because she knows the feelings of Mexicans abroad. She knows that we participate, that we transform, that we also want to actively participate in political parties, and that we want to contribute, and today we cannot do that.”
For his part, Senator Raúl Morón Orozco (Morena) stressed that these proposals are timely in light of the discussion of the electoral reform, which, he said, aims to deepen the democratic procedures of migrants that have been ignored by the Law of Political Parties and the Constitution itself.
He agreed that Mexicans residing abroad can participate politically, strengthening the political force that they have preference, of which they are militants or sympathizers; In that sense, he congratulated the deputy for promoting these initiatives.
Impact on communities
On the part of the organizations, Manuel Castro, from the Coalition of Mexican Migrants, called to reflect on what the electoral reform can bring and how it will impact communities abroad.
“It is a very important, transcendental moment, in which the country has the historical opportunity to demonstrate that we also count, even if we live abroad, but it is also a historical moment to demonstrate to the country that we are a reserve for Mexico, a cultural reserve, an economic reserve, a political reserve, a reserve of all kinds,” he expressed.
While Diego Torres, from the Frente Amplio de Mexicanos Migrantes, said that the reform would make it possible to correct historical underrepresentation and strengthen Mexican democracy.
