The Morena bench in the Senate offered that as a basis for the debate of the eventual constitutional reform initiative in electoral matters, the presence of minorities in proportional representation, that is, multi-member legislatures, will be guaranteed.
In this discussion, it will be up to the guinda party to analyze the issue together with its allies PVEM and PT, as this initiative is one of the commitments of the federal government, with the premise of “reducing the costs of the elections, without this meaning sacrificing efficiency, effectiveness and the right of Mexicans to sovereignly elect the authorities,” said Senator Ignacio Mier (Morena), appointed yesterday as coordinator of his parliamentary group.
Among the axes of the proposal, he added, is “strengthening the full autonomy of the National Electoral Institute”, as the body responsible for the organization of the elections, as well as strengthening the control of resources, so that “not only transparency is guaranteed, but that there are no resources from other sources that could taint the election.”
He clarified that after the constitutional amendment on this matter is approved, the political reform will be discussed, with the participation of all parties, in which the number of members that both chambers should have in Congress, local legislatures and spaces in city councils will be analyzed.
“This will be based on a base: that the presence of minorities is guaranteed in what is known as proportional representation, that the will of the majority is respected, but that the voice of those who voted for an option other than the predominant party or coalition is guaranteed, and that is something that our movement has always defended from the beginning and we are going to assert it,” Mier stressed.
For his part, the coordinator of the PVEM senators, Manuel Velasco, said that they are not closed to any issue, but “it does not mean that we will agree with a proposal that is not for the benefit of democracy.” He spoke out in favor of voting from the age of 16 and electronic and universal and mandatory voting. Also, he noted, “we are in favor of reviewing how we can also have less costly elections,” as well as reaching agreements with the opposition.
