The United States Government requested this Monday the postponement of the next hearing in the criminal case against President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Representative Cilia Flores, citing logistical reasons and the exchange of evidence.
In a letter addressed to Judge Alvin Hellerstein, of the Southern District of New York, federal prosecutor Jay Clayton requested that the session, originally scheduled for March 17, be moved to the 26th of that month, EFE reports.
The request, which has the consent of the defense of both accused, seeks to avoid “scheduling conflicts and logistical problems.”
According to the legal document, this additional time is necessary so that the prosecution “can produce the discovery of evidence” and so that the defense has an opportunity to review it and decide what pretrial motions to file.
Under the pretext of the fight against narcoterrorism, the US launched a massive military aggression on Venezuelan territory on January 3, which affected Caracas and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira. The operation concluded with the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, the representative, Cilia Flores, who were transferred to New York.
The places attacked were mainly of military interest, where air defense devices and communications systems were deployed, although urban areas were also reached and there were civilian victims.
