Dominican Republic agreed to reactivate consular services and air connection with Venezuela

The government of Venezuela reported this Sunday that agreed with the Dominican Republic to reactivate consular services, as well as the air connection between both countries. This after in July 2024 the South American country broke relations with the island because it questioned the result of the presidential elections in which the electoral body proclaimed the victory of Nicolás Maduro.

Through a statement, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry indicated that “in the coming days” consular services will be reactivated after “joint work” between both countries.

“Likewise, both governments have agreed to instruct the respective aeronautical authorities to reactivate the air connection between both countries,” he added.

Since when were consular services between Venezuela and the Dominican Republic suspended?

These operations were suspended by order of the Maduro Executive since July 31, 2024.. This was in response to what he then considered “interference actions” in relation to the presidential elections held that month in Venezuela.

The measure also responded to “the presumption of the use of civil aviation for purposes not compatible with security principles,” according to Chavismo.

The governments of Panama and the Dominican Republic, along with those of Uruguay, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay and Peru, had then expressed their deep concern about the development of the presidential elections. So they demanded a complete review of the results announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which declared Maduro the winner. What the majority opposition denounced as “fraudulent.”

In June last year, Maduro said that Venezuelan airlines were ready to resume flights to the Dominican Republic. But the government of this country responded that it was studying this possibility.

On January 6th, The Dominican Executive expressed before the Organization of American States (OAS) that, “in coherence with the position adopted” after the July 2024 elections in Venezuela, when it did not recognize Maduro’s questioned triumph, “nor can it confer legitimacy to a de facto regime that seeks to perpetuate itself outside of the Venezuelan popular will.”

The statement came after US military troops attacked Caracas and three other neighboring regions. And whose action ended with the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who are detained in New York accused of crimes related to narcoterrorism.

The executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, was sworn in as president of Venezuela on January 5. This after an order from the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).
