María Corina Machado: I don't think they would dare to kill me if I return to Venezuela

The Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado He stated this Sunday that He does not believe that his life will be in danger if he returns to Venezuelathanks to the “pressure” that the United States exerts on the interim government headed by Delcy Rodríguez.

“Things are changing very quickly in Venezuela. If they had caught me before I left, I would probably have been disappeared or worse.“, declared the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in an interview with CBS.

“Right now, I don’t think they dare kill me because of the presence, pressure and actions of the United States,” added Machado, who is currently in exile in Washington. Although he has expressed his desire to return to the South American country as soon as possible.

The opposition leader pointed out that she does not know “how many possibilities she would have” to move freely within Venezuelan territory. But he assured that Chavismo “would be very afraid” of making an attempt on his lifesince “the regime knows the connection” that she maintains with the government of Donald Trump.

On Saturday, when asked if Machado should be able to return to Venezuela, Trump suggested that he could “bring together” Chavismo and the opposition to bring positions closer together.

“We have to do something with this. Maybe bring the parties together and do something. She (Machado) is a very good person and, at the same time, the current leadership (Delcy Rodríguez) is doing a very good job,” he stated.

US Ambassador Laura Dogu arrived in Caracas on Saturday to reopen the US diplomatic mission in Venezuela, closed for seven years after the breakdown of diplomatic relations between both countries.

His arrival occurred a day after Delcy Rodríguez announced a general amnesty for all political prisoners and the closure of Helicoide, a detention center feared for torture and human rights abuses.
