Iberia plans to resume flights to Venezuela in April if “safety guarantees” are given

Nota empresarial Iberia

Iberia is “reorganizing” its resources and planning with the intention of resuming flights to the country at the beginning of April “if full safety guarantees are given.” Until November, the company had five weekly frequencies between Madrid and Caracas (10 flights in total)

The Spanish airline Iberia intends to resume flights to Venezuela at the beginning of April, but “if full safety guarantees are given,” after the Spanish State Aviation Safety Agency announced that it was extending the recommendation not to fly over that country until February 16.

“Iberia is going to keep its operations suspended in Venezuela for some time,” 30 company sources said on Friday, who also claim to follow the recommendation of the European aviation safety agency (EASA).

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced on Thursday that commercial air connections with Venezuela would be opened “very soon” in a context in which he had ordered the process to begin now, after a conversation with the Venezuelan president, Delcy Rodríguez.

Trump assured that he had given “instructions to Sean Duffy (US Secretary of Transportation) and everyone else involved, including the military, so that, no later than the end of Thursday, the airspace over Venezuela will be open.”

Iberia is “reorganizing” its resources and planning with the intention of resuming flights to the country at the beginning of April “if full security guarantees are given,” company sources stressed.

Until November, Iberia had five weekly frequencies between Madrid and Caracas (ten flights in total), the same as Air Europa, while Plus Ultra had four, one of them between the Spanish Atlantic island of Tenerife and the Venezuelan capital.

Air Europa currently plans to maintain the suppression of flights between Madrid and Caracas until February 14, while Plus Ultra has set the date for February 16.

For its part, Venezuelan Laser (which rents Plus Ultra planes and crews) has four other frequencies and Estelar (with leased Iberojet planes) had three connections until last November, that is, six flights in total.

The announcement of extreme caution by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on November 21, when North American military pressure increased in the Caribbean, and the recommendations of the air safety agencies of Europe and Spain led airlines to stop operations with the South American country.

Iberia canceled its five weekly flights the next day, a decision that was joined by other companies such as the Portuguese TAP, the Brazilian Gol and the Colombian Avianca, as well as Air Europa or Plus Ultra, which made the same decision in the following days.
