Court maintains arrest of pilot accused of beating young man in Brasília

The Federal District Court decided this Saturday (31) to maintain the arrest of businessman and racing driver Pedro Turra, aged 19, after a custody hearing. The decision was confirmed by the accused’s defense.Court maintains arrest of pilot accused of beating young man in Brasília

Turra was arrested this Friday (30) by the Civil Police for serious bodily injury. He is accused of attacking a 16-year-old teenager, during a fight that occurred last week, in the Vicente Pires neighborhood, in the federal capital.

The disagreement occurred over a piece of gum thrown at a friend of the victim, who is admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Águas Claras Hospital, where he remains in a coma.

In the decision, the judge responsible for the hearing also determined that the Civil Police internal affairs department be notified about the possible failure to fulfill their functional duties by the police officers who arrested the pilot.

Defense

In a note sent to Agência Brasil, lawyer Eder Fior said that the accused reported during the hearing that he was the target of death threats and accused the police officers who carried out the arrest of failing to comply with their legal duty of protection.

Furthermore, the defense accused the police of promoting the “spectacularization” of the case.

“The defense is appalled at the undue spectacle promoted by police chiefs and agents, who, in conduct that is completely incompatible with the Rule of Law, disrespected the express judicial decision that determined the preservation of the image of the person in custody, exposing him in a degrading manner and increasing concrete risks to his safety and dignity,” stated the lawyer.

New prison

Turra was arrested the day after the attack, but paid bail of R$24,000 and was free to answer the investigation for bodily injury.

The new arrest was authorized by the courts after the police presented evidence that the businessman was involved in other cases of aggression. In one of them, he would have used a taser (stun gun) against a 17-year-old teenager to force her to drink alcohol during a party. Furthermore, a man came to the police station to report that he was also attacked by the pilot in June last year.

After the episode, Turra was also removed from Formula Delta, the motorsport competition in which he worked as a driver.
