Tlaxcala records the death of a minor due to complications associated with measles; call to reinforce vaccination

Due to the seriousness of the case, his transfer to the Tlaxcala Children’s Hospital was requested, where the corresponding protocol was activated in the event of a suspected case of measles. However, the progression of the disease led to severe complications and the minor died on January 30 at 10:31 a.m.

The death was notified to the General Directorate of Epidemiology and the National Center for Health and Adolescence.

In its positioning, the Tlaxcala Health Sector urged mothers, fathers and guardians to maintain complete childhood vaccination schedules.

“We call on the population to review their vaccination records so that, in case they lack doses to apply, they go to receive them at the macro vaccination centers or health centers,” the statement said, warning that “high mobility with neighboring states with measles cases is the most important risk factor.”

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious complications, especially in unvaccinated minors, such as pneumonia, encephalitis and, in extreme cases, death.

In Mexico, the triple viral vaccine (MMR) is part of the national scheme and is key to controlling outbreaks; However, health authorities have warned that the decrease in vaccination coverage and population mobility increase the risk of reintroduction and transmission of the virus.

Just this Tuesday, the Secretary of Health, David Kershenobich, reported that to contain measles infections, they are evaluating installing vaccination centers in stations of the Metro Collective Transportation System (STC) and in bus terminals.

Measles in Mexico has shown a sustained expansion since its reintroduction in 2025, according to official epidemiological surveillance reports.

The first confirmed case was reported in epidemiological week 5 of that year and, since then, transmission has spread throughout the country. With cut-off date of January 28, 2026confirmed cases are distributed in the 32 federal entities and in at least 277 municipalities, reflecting a national outbreak.

According to the report from the General Directorate of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, as of January 28, 7,732 confirmed cases of measles in the country.

In terms of mortality, the report reported 26 deaths associated with measles nationwide. In 2025, 25 deaths and so far in 2026, one death, which was registered in Michoacán.
