Santo Domingo.– The Government decreed this Friday official mourning for the death of the prominent political leader Ramón Alburquerque Ramírez, in recognition of his extensive career in the country’s public life.
The provision was signed by the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, through Decree No. 62-26, which declares Sunday, February 1, 2026 as an official day of mourning throughout the national territory for the departure of Alburquerque, a key figure in Dominican institutional development.
The decree instructs that the Ministry of Defense pay the corresponding military honors in tribute to the chemical and political engineer, considered one of the most prominent citizens in Dominican public life in recent decades. Likewise, it orders that the National Flag be flown at half-mast in military compounds and public buildings during the day designated as an expression of official mourning.
The government provision is also sent to the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense and the Interior and Police to guarantee the execution and compliance with the established procedures.
Ramón Alburquerque Ramírez died on January 30, 2026 at the age of 76, after facing a delicate health condition related to liver cancer, as reported by his family through social networks.
Alburquerque was a political and technical figure of the first order: a chemical engineer by training, former senator for the Monte Plata province for four terms and former president of the Senate on three occasions, where he consolidated his role as a central actor in the Dominican democratic debate.
He also held key positions in public administration, including Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, president of the Dominican Oil Refinery, president of the National Energy Commission and president of the National Technical Forestry Commission (CONATEF), contributing to public policies in strategic areas for national development.
At the party level, he was president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) and, later, one of the founding leaders of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), being an example of leadership, dedication and institutional construction within Dominican politics.
The Senate of the Republic also announced that it will pay official honors in his memory on Sunday, February 1 in the National Assembly, highlighting Alburquerque’s career and legacy in the democratic life of the country.
With this decree of official mourning, the Government and Dominican society honor the life of a man who profoundly marked politics, institutions and public service in the Dominican Republic.
