La Oroya: Comptroller's Office intervenes due to tree felling in Miguel Grau Park

The Comptroller General of the Republic intervened on Thursday afternoon in the Miguel Grau park, located in the district of Santa Rosa de Sacco, province of Yauli-La Oroya, after the controversy generated by the felling of almost 27 ancient trees carried out by the district municipality.

The control personnel arrived at the area to verify in situ the state of the green area and verify the magnitude of the environmental damage caused. During the diligence, the remains of the removed trees were inspected and the technical and administrative documentation supporting the work carried out was requested from the commune, in order to prepare a control report.

The intervention of the Comptroller’s Office occurs in the midst of questions against the management of Mayor Ovidio Rodríguez Yurivilca, who authorized the beginning of the removal of land for the construction of a new park in the same space. However, the execution of the work generated neighborhood rejection as it implied the total disappearance of the existing trees, planted since the 1980s.

According to the residents, the use of heavy machinery to remove the pine trees was carried out despite citizens’ complaints, in an area where green spaces are limited due to the geographical conditions of the district.
