The organization supported the release of prisoners of conscience and asked that the process be expeditious, without delays or exclusions. He also demanded the closure of all judicial cases opened for political reasons.
The Primero Justicia party spoke out after Delcy Rodríguez’s announcement about a general amnesty process and stated that this should include all cases opened for political persecution from 1999 to the present.
In a public statementthe organization welcomed the eventual and prompt release of prisoners of conscience, but demanded that the amnesty process fully honor its purposes and not leave anyone behind bars or subject to judicial persecution. In that sense, he maintained that all cases opened for political reasons must be closed and that releases must occur without delay.
First, Justice demanded that the amnesty be executed through an expeditious process, without undue delays, and questioned the prolongation of the uncertainty faced by the families of those detained. “Enough playing with the hope of the families who wait, with anguish and dignity, for the release of their loved ones,” the text noted.
The organization indicated that, along with the releases, immediate progress must be made in the dismantling of the repression apparatus and the definitive closure of what it described as the “revolving door of persecution.”
The statement also raised the need to allow the immediate and safe return of exiles and politically persecuted people, with guarantees for the full exercise of their fundamental, civil and political rights.
First, Justice recognized the work of the families of political prisoners and human rights organizations, stating that without their efforts knowledge of the truth would not have been possible. Likewise, he urged citizens and the international community to accompany and monitor compliance with the dismantling of the repressive scheme.
In the text, the organization called on Venezuelans to actively participate in the process and assume a role of citizen audit of its compliance. He also called for advancing a process of historical memory that contributes to justice and national reconciliation.
Finally, he demanded that the amnesty law not become a mechanism of impunity that stops reparations for victims or covers up those who have committed human rights violations. The statement concludes with a call for the full release of all people detained for political reasons.
This Friday, Delcy Rodríguez passed a “general amnesty law” and asked the National Assembly, with a pro-government majority, to discuss and approve the regulations “to promote coexistence in Venezuela.” He also ordered the “closure” of Helicoide, a Sebin unit that has been called a “torture center” by family members and human rights organizations.
“I announce a general amnesty law and I order that this law be brought to the National Assembly to promote coexistence in Venezuela,” said Rodríguez during the opening of the judicial year, at the headquarters of the Supreme Court of Justice.
He also announced the closure of Helicoide as a police headquarters, and indicated that it will become a center of social and sports services for the community.
