Premier Álvarez affirms that there is no basis to censor or vacate José Jerí

Premier Álvarez affirms that there is no basis to censor or vacate José Jerí

After the ‘Chifagate’ case, the president of the Council of Ministers, Ernesto Alvarezstated that a censure is not appropriate nor are there constitutional arguments for a vacancy against President José Jerí.

“Censorship is definitely not appropriate. The president has been sworn in and is in office, therefore, he cannot be subject to censure. And there are no arguments for a vacancy either, because in principle it is a constitutional solution in the case of a president of the republic who has committed especially serious crimes that cannot wait for the end of his term. In this case, there are no signs of a crime,” he declared.

The premier indicated that requests for vacancy or censure are part of the exercise of political oversight that the Constitution recognizes for congressmen. However, he specified that so far no malicious conduct attributable to the president has been identified.

In this context, he indicated that he supports the statement of the Peruvian Association of Constitutional Law, which indicates that a censure against someone who constitutionally exercises the Presidency of the Republic after having been sworn in before the head of Congress is not appropriate.

“We are facing a figure of provisional president, but not in charge. That is a serious mistake. President Jerí, at this moment, is a constitutional president,” he pointed out.

Premier affirms that vacancy would bring instability to the country

The head of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers warned that promoting changes in the leadership of the Executive in the short term could generate instability, especially in a scenario of elections already called.

Likewise, he assured that the head of state has expressed his willingness to collaborate fully with the investigations carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office. “He has nothing to hide,” he said.

On the other hand, the premier reiterated that the Ministerial Cabinet supports José Jerí and reported that the Citizen Security Plan is in its final review stage.
